A helicopter shot is when the bat hits the ball by a wristy flick, and by using the bottom-hand as the main dominant force. It is only successful when the bat is circled overhead. It was Santosh Lal, a childhood friend and former Ranji teammate of Dhoni, who introduced him to the shot. Before him, Sachin Tendulkar, Kevin Peterson, Aravinda Silva, and Charama Silva have also played the shot. It was Mohammad Azharuddin who played the first helicopter shot in 1990 against Sri Lanka, at Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, India.
