The athlete became just the second Indian to ever win an Olympic gold medal, following Abhinav Bindra. It was intended to be India’s final competition at the Summer Games, and it was really a fairy-tale finish for the country (10-meter air rifle event – Beijing 2008).

The Indian athlete more than lived up to the challenge on Saturday, as he jumped out to an incredible lead in the finals with a throw of 87.03 metres. Even though that would have been enough to earn him a medal, he finished the race with his second try, which traveled 87.58 metres. On the day when 1.3 billion people celebrated one of the biggest days in the nation’s athletic history, Neeraj was unmatched by anybody else.
