Delhi Capitals, one of the three remaining teams without an IPL championship, have the unwelcome distinction of having suffered the most IPL defeats. With two semifinal finishes in the first two tournaments, the Delhi-based franchise got off to a good start but fell off the pace after that. The best season for them came in 2012 when they won the league and ended first, but they were eliminated from the playoffs after losing to KKR and CSK in the qualifying rounds. The failure to make the playoffs for six straight seasons that followed. They also became the squad with the most wooden-spoon finishes during this time. DC made the playoffs for the first time in seven years during the 2019 season. In the end, they came in third and lost to CSK in the qualifying rounds. RCB, one of the IPL’s most entertaining teams, has often struggled in the competition.
Despite possessing one of the finest teams on paper in multiple editions, they have only managed to reach three finals and two play-off finishes. Due to the presence of two of the greatest batsmen of all time, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are expected to dominate most opposition on the majority of days. However, the bowling unit has consistently been neglected, and excessive reliance on the two heavyweights has caused the RCB to lose crucial matches. Often referred to as “chokers,” RCB just missed winning the championship in 2009 and 2016 despite being so close. They suffered a convincing loss to CSK in 2011. RCB is fourth in the list of most defeats in the IPL, with 83 wins and 92 losses from 177 completed games, along with a victory and a loss in two super-over ties.
After placing last in the first competition, The Sunrises Hyderabad went on to win the trophy the following year. In the third season, the team under Gilchrist advanced to the semifinals but struggled in the next two. They participated for five seasons, losing 46 of their 75 games. In the seven years to date, the Sunrisers have won one championship (2016) and made five playoff appearances. Sunrisers Hyderabad/Deccan Chargers are second on the record of most defeats in the IPL with a combined loss total of 95 games.
