Wallows from Los Angeles had already developed an '80s-inspired style with undertones of post-punk, synth pop, and power pop as well as more grounded modern bedroom pop by the time they started releasing songs under that moniker in 2017. 2019 saw the release of Nothing Happens, their debut album, which was helped along by the alternative single "Are You Bored Yet?" with Clairo, which peaked at number 75 on the Billboard 200.
