Avast published a list of 133 phony apps in March 2021, estimating that they had been downloaded 500 million times. According to a survey by VPNCheck, a VPN review platform, 84 of these fraudulent apps are still accessible on the App Store more than a year later, defrauding customers out of more than $100 million annually. The research poses important concerns regarding Apple’s security protocols and the processes used to review apps before they are released. This is due to the fact that only the App Store allows users of Apple iOS to download apps. App sideloading is not permitted, whereas it is on Android. Apple maintains strict control over which apps can be released through the store and levies a 30% commission, a move that is still up for debate and is being fought by businesses like Epic Games.
Avast’s list was examined by VPNCheck, which then independently verified the information for each program in Sensor Tower. It was discovered that in June 2022, the active “fleece are” programs had 7.2 million distinct downloads, generating a total net income of $8.6 million in a single month. Based on statistics for June, it is estimated that these apps are operating a $103.2 million scam on the AppStore.
The term “fleece” describes mobile applications with exorbitant, obtrusive subscription costs. The majority of the time, these applications profit from users who are unaware of how to cancel subscriptions.
The majority of the list’s scam apps are games like virtual instruments for music or productivity tools like torches and calculators. When you search for apps like photo or video editors, quiz games, scanners, tuners, volume boosters, or apps for fortune telling, these categories may also appear in your results. Even though these are some of the most frequently seen themes, there may be con artists operating in other niches.
Examining these apps’ rating breakdowns can help you identify such scams quickly. The majority of their 5-star ratings, many of which were purchased, would typically be left by anonymous reviewers. These take place over a set length of time and are intended to cover up the numerous honest negative reviews left by real users.
