Bollywood superstar, Karan Johar, is back with one more reality show. This time, he will choose India’s Next Superstar (Star Plus), along with Rohit Shetty. The show will run all through the week, from Monday to Friday, with the spotlight on the grooming part, while weekends will feature the elimination segment of the show.
To be honest, we were a tad disappointed, for, given the talent hunt genre of the show, and Karan being the honest, forthright person he is, we expected him to address the raging nepotism debate, which he, sadly, skirted. The media was advised to avoid the topic.
Excerpts
What will you bring to the show?
Our job, as directors, is to find talent, and with this show we are going to continue doing just that. Our aim is to provide new talent to the industry, which is quite a responsibility. So, we will be both, a friend, and a hard taskmaster. We might even scold them at times, if needed.
On Superstars and superstardom?
It is difficult to define a superstar. If we knew the meaning, then there would be millions of superstars. It’s a feeling that an actor and audiences have. It is organic. You don’t know why you love Shahrukh Khan or Amitabh Bachchan or Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit. It is something that they bring on celluloid and the way they connect with the audience. They have instant family connect with audiences. This generation has lots of superstars– Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkumar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana. Today, there are lots of opportunities, so we can’t categorize who is on top or even in the top three. I hope we, as filmmakers, get the opportunity to work with all of them. But finally, it’s the audiences who are the biggest superstars.
Was the tagline of the show, Kyunki Superstars Bante Nahin…Banaye Jaate Hain!, an answer to Kangana Ranaut?
I don’t think this tagline was an answer from my side to anything. A lot of people want to be part of the entertainment industry, but find it difficult to get a platform. We are providing a platform to all those who are talented.
Will Kangana come on the show?
I am sure if Star Plus invites her, we will be happy to have her. Our heart is big and our house is open to all. We will welcome her on the show, happily, lovingly and respectfully.
