As we celebrate World Television Day on November 21, actor Saanand Verma shares his thoughts on the profound impact television has had on his life, both as an artist and a viewer. The actor, known for his versatile roles, emphasizes how the &TV show, Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, has revolutionized his perspective on television consumption.

“Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai has truly changed the way I see television,” he shares. “It has had a significant impact on me, not only as an actor but also as a viewer. Shashank Bali, the director, has done an incredible job, and Mr. Manoj Santoshi, the writer, is brilliant. The producers, Binaiferr Kohli and Sanjay Kohli, have created something special.”

For Saanand, the future of television looks incredibly promising. “The medium is here to stay,” he asserts. “India is a vast country, and while internet penetration may not be as high as in the West, television continues to thrive, especially in rural and Tier 2 and 3 cities. It’s where the largest viewership exists, and that connection with the audience remains unparalleled.”

However, the actor also reflects on the challenges facing television today. While he believes television is an excellent medium for storytelling, he points out that commercial pressures have shifted the focus. “Television has become more about creating hooks and moments to keep viewers coming back, rather than telling authentic, compelling stories,” he notes. “We need to bring the focus back to quality storytelling.”

He also recalls a time when television was more grounded and relatable, drawing attention to the game-changing influence of Ekta Kapoor. “Before Ekta Kapoor, television was more earthy and realistic. After her arrival, the landscape shifted with shows like KBC, Bigg Boss, and Indian Idol,” he recalls.

Saanand Verma is currently seen in Anupam Kher starrer Vijay 69 on Netflix.
