If there is one gal who has made a quite mark for herself, it is Erica Fernandes. After starting with South Indian films, she entered Sony show, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi. Although it never rated big, Erica’s self-respecting doctor character, Sonakshi Bose, was noticed by one and all. Now she is the cynosure of all eyes, having been selected to play the main female lead in Ekta Kapoor’s reboot of Kasautii Zindagii Kay.
We caught up with Erica over chai and cookies. Read on to find out what’s on her mind.
One more show with a Bong connection?
Well, it seems to stay with me (smiles). I was Bong, in Kuch Rang, while I am getting married to one, in Kasautii. I told Parth about all the regional stuff I picked up during my above Sony outing.
Did you follow Kasautii 1?
Yes I did, but I was a kid back then. My main recollection of the old Kasautii was the hero (Cezanne Khan) with the dupatta (promo). But yes, I did binge watch a lot after being selected, which brought back a flood of memories regarding the story and characters/actors.
How would you describe Prerna?
A fun-loving, free-spirited girl, who always stands for the right. For her, nothing is above her family, and she will do what it takes to protect their interests.
The characters of Sonakshi and Prerna are poles apart, and this is what I was looking for, not wanting to get typecast in one particular mould. I am not taking too much tension; I prefer putting in my 100%.
What do you feel about co-star, Parth Samthaan?
It is too early to say, as we have just started shooting.
How did Kasautii 2 happen?
Every TV actor wants to work with Balaji. When I first signed on the dotted line, I was not sure of the project, but still went ahead, trusting Ekta mam’s vision. Later, when I came to know that it was Kasautii and STAR Plus, what more could I ask for?
I am really amazed at the amount of work she pulls off, not only paying personal attention to all her TV shows, but also to movies and web series. Does she ever sleep?
What has the reaction of fans been to the catchy promos?
When the first one came out, I was not really revealed, but those who knew me were very happy for me. The second one brought a lot of love and affection. I feel blessed by the fact that SRK has narrated the same.
Your take on Kuch Rang, which had a Season 2 on the back of public pressure?
It should not have gone off air at first when it did. Fans also wanted a third season, but I did not think that the channel and production house (Beyond Dreams) are really game, and we actors also need to plan ahead. So accordingly, I went ahead and signed Kasautii.
It’s been a while since Kuch Rang wrapped up. What did you do in the interim?
Desperately wanting a break, for daily soap actors don’t have a life. I travelled, checked out Bhutan and the beautiful Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Now, with my batteries recharged, I am back with a bang.
Many TV actors are making a beeline for films. Any Bollywood dreams?
I am not really going crazy to be in films. Being a believer in karma, if it is destined, it will happen.
How do you unwind after a hard day at the grinding stone?
The me-time at home with my dog always does the trick. Even when I am totally pooped, he will come and sleep in my lap, which just makes my day.
