Rubina Dilaik is quite satisfied with her eunuch character in Colors’ show Shakti — Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki as she shares with a chat with IndianWikiMedia.
“I attribute our continuing success to the unique concept which has been presented with great sensitivity. It was a big risk when we first started out. The fear was palpable till we hit pay dirt. The fact that our show has worked means that audiences out there have also widened their vision which is a big thing.”
Here Rubina wishes to thank his boyfriend Abhinav Shukla and friends (Sharad and Keerti Kelkar) for their constant support “When I first bounced off the idea to them, they told me to grab it with both hands for it could change my career dynamics. Even if things went south, at least I would have tried to do something different.”
Talking about position of eunuchs in society and the talented lady says, “It is sad that we discriminate on basis of sex, race and religion. Agreed some people are different, but they are born like this. Rather than looking down upon them, we should celebrate diversity. They should get all the rights and respect they deserve. We have many eunuchs on our set and we treat them just like others. As pubic figure it is very important that we send out a strong message of social equity.”
Rubina regards the above role as bold. “For me boldness does not mean essaying merely attractive sassy roles. I took up a challenge which several of my compatriots had rejected. After being part of five shows (Choti Bahu 1 &2 and Punar Vivah – Ek Nayi Umeed among others), I too could have played safe. There was a lot of chance that the show would not have worked for neither did I play a glamorous sari clad girl, nor was it your normal romantic drama. So yes, I did take a bold step.”
Rubina has stayed away from the nonfiction space. She explains the reason. “I guess I did not really get the time. I had been dong back to back fiction projects ever since my debut in 2008. Hence around 2014 post Jeannie Aur Juju I decided to take a break to break out of the Choti Bahu image, the above hit Zee TV show had been airing on some or other channel for a very long time.”
“And post the break I needed a show completely different from my earlier roles and yet be equally strong to again mark my presence as an actor. And Shakti was exactly what the doctor ordered.”
In closing we ask her about her lack of big time presence on social media. “I don’t believe in instant gratification. Being a thorough professional, I let my work speak for itself.”
Well said and wish you more success, Rubina.
