Actress Mahika Sharma, who has featured in television shows like Ramayana, F.I.R and Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai, says Bihu is the time to be thankful and honour farmers and cattles.
She says, “The Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of the harvest season and is also an Assamese new year. It is an upbeat Assamese festival celebrated for a period of seven days. It is the time to show gratitude to our farmers and animals. Cattle and farm animals are honoured on the first day of the festival. The animals are allowed to roam freely in the field on that day. This ritual is performed to express gratitude to the animals who assist farmers in farming. We also pray to god for a fruitful year ahead. ”
The Miss Teen Northeast feels Bihu is about art and culture of Assam. She tells, “The festival is also credited to art and culture and we all celebrate the heritage of the state. During this occasion, people dress up in traditional muga silk attire, sing traditional Bihu melodies, and perform traditional dance.”
Mahika, also known for featuring in movies like ‘Mr Joe B. Carvalho, ‘Mardaani’ and ‘Chalo Dilli’ is hosting Bihu get together in Mumbai. “To mark the celebration I’m organising a small Bihu get together at my place here in Mumbai. I enjoy hosting Bihu every year. I’m all prepared with new Mekhela Chador and Bihu song collections. Bihu dance is meant to celebrate and emulate the seasonal spirit, celebrating fertility and passion. And also I have invited a chef from Assam to cook the Bihu delicacies such as Jalpan and Laroo. It will be a great Bihu after two years of the pandemic,” she adds.
