Describe yourself and your love for belly dance in few words?
I am Sanjana Sharma, born in Delhi and raised in Mumbai. I transitioned from being a self-taught Bollywood dancer to a belly dancer. My journey through belly dance has been my way of experiencing life. My love for belly dance is as deep as my love for family, as it has connected me to a new family of students and colleagues.
Are you a tattoo person?
I am not into tattoos or any adornments. I prefer a very simple and natural look. Although certain traditions like sindoor and toe rings were introduced after my marriage, I still embrace simplicity.
If you could be from any other era, what would it be?
I would choose the 80s because I’ve already lived through the 90s. I want to explore an era when things were still evolving, like the early days of dance education. The 80s seem like an exciting time to witness that artistic and cultural transformation.
What’s the most common misconception people have about belly dance?
Many people misunderstand belly dance, thinking it’s just body shaking or adult entertainment, but it’s much more. It’s inclusive of all body types and originally a cultural art form before commercialization.
So would you date a fan?
I don’t think I would. I have always been very focused on my life, I married my childhood best friend because he never gave up on me. He made me realize my love for him over the years, and it’s been a beautiful journey from friendship to marriage.
Your favorite belly dance music or song?
My favorite song is “Badna Nwalee El Jaw,” an Arabic pop party song. It’s all about having a great time, forgetting your worries, and enjoying the moment. It’s a happening tune!
Any wild dreams you have seen?
Yes, I have dreamt a lot about dancing in clubs and restaurants both in Egypt and foreign countries and especially in India to change the perception of belly dance from adult entertainment to respected art for everyone’s entertainment.
Your biggest or weirdest fear?
My biggest fear is not being able to dance due to injury or accidents. Recently, I had an injury that turned everything upside down. I’m afraid of harming my body and always strive to understand and respect it.
Your dream destination?
My dream is to visit Europe with my husband, who’s a percussionist. I want to dance and play music in European streets. I also dream of going to Egypt with him. These are my dream destinations with my husband.
Favorite pastime?
I enjoy watching true-based movies and documentaries on Netflix. They’re inspiring and motivating.
