Read on.
What were you looking at role-wise for your comeback? And how does Prithvi in Parineetii match the bill?
I have always played the good son, great husband and father, and also the role of Lord Krishna in Paramavatar Shri Krishna. When my last show ended, I manifested that I wanted to do a role which is grey, dark, challenging, something which I had not done in my career. When Prithvi’s character was narrated to me, I was blown away. The good part is that there is a white and a black television. Unfortunately, very rarely, you get to play a grey. Prithvi walks on a thin line. But he is justified in a way for what he is doing, and you will get to know why he is like that. I was honestly looking for something like this role.
I would love to be hated if Prithvi Agnihotri has to be hated. If that happens, my job is done.
Tell us about the challenges on your side in playing Prithvi?
When you do TV for so long, you end up doing similar kinds of scenes in every show. Since I have been on TV for 22 years now, I have done the same sequences so many times. But every time I am doing something in Parineetii, it is new for me as an actor. It is something that you work towards, and want to do it differently. It is challenging to play a part like this. My idea is to do it unconventionally. I wanted to be more conversational so that the impact is more. In short, I am trying to play the character differently from what has been done on television.
Tell us in detail about the role?
I don’t know whether I can dive deep into Prithvi Agnihotri as certain things are kept under wraps. What I can say is that this guy has a traumatic past. He is been dealt cards which were not right, which destroyed a lot for him. That is the reason why he is like that.
What are your expectations from the role?
The only expectation as an actor is that people should enjoy what I am doing. They should like watching me in the role. I would love to be hated if this guy has to be hated. If that happens, my job is done. It has hardly been a week, and the kind of response, love and fan edits pouring in is overwhelming. I am glad that people are enjoying this. This is what we work for.
What do you have to say about shows having a very short life span of 2 to 3 months now? What do you think has given rise to this scenario?
A lot of shows do have a short span. Nothing that we can do about it. It is eventually the content that is being created, and if the audience enjoys it, it is reflected in numbers. If they are not, the network also needs to move on, though it is difficult for the network, producers, actors and the unit. Eventually, all is in the hands of destiny. What’s given rise to this scenario is competition. There are so many networks and shows, and everybody wants their project to do well. A lot depends on luck. Television is a writer’s medium. If the content is good, and it has a good package of actors, it works normally.
Best of luck!!
