On World Television Day, which is observed on November 21, ace producer Binaiferr Kohli, who co-runs Edit II along with husband Sanjay Kohli, said that television has been a powerful medium for influencing society over the years.

“Television is a fantastic medium for storytelling when done right. It can convey powerful narratives, evoke emotions, and create lasting impressions. Comedy, for instance, not only entertains but also makes you feel good, contributing to a healthy mindset and positive energy,” she said.

“Television has portrayed stronger women, highlighted our ethics and culture, and provided a realistic picture of societal issues. Through its content, television has celebrated festivals, traditions, and social values, shaping public opinion and reflecting societal changes,” she added.

Binaiferr believes that comedy has evolved significantly over the years. “It’s no longer just slapstick where someone slips on a banana peel, and people laugh. Today, comedy incorporates meaningful messages, human emotions, and slices of life,” she said.

“It addresses important issues, like educating about the girl child or showing what middle-aged women can achieve, all through a humorous lens. Comedy now entertains while also teaching and inspiring society in a subtle yet impactful way,” she added.

She also stressed that everyone loves a good comedy because it’s relatable. “Audiences connect to the characters, their catchphrases, and the humorous situations they face. Comedy makes viewers feel like they’re part of a family, building an emotional bond with the story and characters,” she said.

Binaiferr, who mentioned that shows like Buniyaad and Kalyug on DD had a great impact on her, feels that television will continue to have its unique place.

“While OTT platforms offer finite episodes and the convenience of watching anytime, television creates a habit. It allows audiences to connect deeply with characters and their ongoing journeys. Digital platforms have affected TRPs, as people can watch the show anytime and anywhere. Both mediums have their pros and cons, and they will coexist,” she ended.
