Have you ever imagined that you would get back on the set of Tenali Rama and reprise Sharda?
Getting back on Tenali Rama was extremely surprising. My fans took out an old video of mine, I guess, of two years after I had quit the show when someone had asked me if I would accept it if I got a chance to be back on Tenali Rama again. I had said that if the show was made again, and if I was approached, I would be back. Three years later, it worked out and the new season came and I got an opportunity. Throughout these six years, I have had these non-stop requests to get back as Sharda. I did not think there would ever be a Season 2, but I am glad I am back.
Every character I have played has been different. From donning positive to negative roles and doing comedy, the journey has been challenging.
What were the due changes you had to work on this time when it came to Sharda?
This time the show is more about family values, and relationships. Last time it was more into comedy. Sharda has a emotional take and there is an intelligence quotient too in the way she is projected. Playing Sharda comes very naturally to me, and I have easily been able to bring in the needed changes in Sharda.
What do you have to say about the return of Tenali Rama. How has the journey been so far?
The journey around Tenali Rama has been great. Sharda was loved by everyone during the initial season too. This time around, we have got twice as much love. We have the old viewers and the new ones too. The show has been an absolute favourite of mine. Sharda is the most favourite character that I have ever played in my 15 years of acting journey.
You have been the positive, and negative lead and also done comedy. How satisfying has been the journey of an actor for you?
I believe I am blessed as an actor. I have got a chance to play such different characters. From my first show Bairi Piya, where I played a courtesan to doing youth shows like Swim Team where I played an Olympics swimmer, to Chaman Bahar, where I played a Bhojpuri actress, to Sharda which is a historical comedy show – the list is gratifying. Every character I have played has been different. Yes, from donning positive to negative roles and doing comedy, has been challenging.
Sony SAB has had wonderful heart-wrenching stories to tell. The channel has a beautiful familiar connection in its relatable stories.
Tell us about your rapport with Krishna Bharadwaj and Nimisha Vakhariaji.
Krishna and I get along like a house of fire. This bond translates into our onscreen chemistry. We are similar people in terms of the kinds of conversations we have. We have grown as individuals and the friendship is intact and stronger this time. I have a great rapport with Nimishaji. Playing Sharda is very difficult. Matching my expressions and dialogues with Amma’s actions is tough. It would not have been possible without Nimishaji’s help and the great bond that we share.
What do you think is the USP of this new edition of the show?
The new edition has a lot more drama, lots of emotional ups and downs along with the old essence of comedy and fun with the intelligence that Tenali Rama brings.
What is the best reward that you look forward to with every character you play?
The love that comes from the audience is the best reward I can get. It is a gratifying and satisfying element for me.
How has the viewers’ response been so far?
The response to the show and my role has been tremendous. They have been waiting to see me again as Sharda. They are very happy that I am back as Sharda. I get so many appreciative messages, fan edits etc. They love Sharda twice as much as they loved her earlier.
What have you to say about Sony SAB’s growth in terms of offering variety in programming to the viewers?
Sony SAB has seen immense growth from the time Tenali Rama was on with its first edition. They have had wonderful heart-wrenching stories to tell. The channel has a beautiful familiar connection in its relatable stories. Even though our show is a historical comedy, there are so many lessons that you can take back into your real life.
