Actress Papia Sengupta is making waves with her captivating portrayal of Kanchan Chotwani in the Zee TV show Jamai No. 1, produced by Studio LSD. Known for her versatility and powerful performances, Papia brings to life a character who appears loving and innocent on the surface but hides dark motives beneath.

Speaking about her role, Papia shared, “Kanchan Chotwani is a multi-layered character, and playing her is both challenging and exciting. She’s a woman who comes across as the perfect, caring mother in front of her daughter, Riddhi. But deep down, she harbours this intense hatred for Neel, her son-in-law, and is determined to destroy him as part of her revenge plan. That contrast between her innocent facade and her revengeful intentions is what makes Kanchan so intriguing.”

It’s always exciting to explore such a dark, vengeful side of a character while maintaining her innocent appearance.

The show’s current track has Kanchan devising a wicked scheme during the Holi party. Sharing details about the dramatic sequence, Papia said, “During the Holi celebration, Kanchan’s sole focus is on executing her plan against Neel. She believes she has everything arranged perfectly, especially when she tells Kamlesh, ‘Neel’s chapter will end today.’ It’s such a powerful line because it shows how far her obsession with revenge has taken her.”

Papia also touched upon her character’s complex dynamic with Neel. “Kanchan and Neel are always at odds. Neel sees right through her facade, and their confrontations are filled with tension. He even mocks her by saying her heart is black, which only fuels her anger more. It’s exciting to play such intense scenes.”

The Holi track also explores Neel’s determination to bring happiness into Riddhi’s life. Describing the beautiful moment when Neel applies colours to Riddhi, Papia remarked, “That scene is so heartwarming. Neel is trying to make Riddhi see herself through his eyes, using colours to represent positivity, hope, peace, understanding, wisdom, beauty, purity, and love. And all the while, Kanchan is there, watching her plans fall apart. It’s dramatic, emotional, and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.”

Talking about her experience on the show, Papia added, “Playing Kanchan has been a rollercoaster ride, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It’s always exciting to explore such a dark, vengeful side of a character while maintaining her innocent appearance. I can’t wait for viewers to see how the story unfolds and how Kanchan continues to manipulate those around her.”
