Review of Sony TV’s Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2: An army-civilian love story which is worth a watch

After seeing the new Sony show Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2, I was reminded more of the Randeep Rai and Ashi Singh high school romance saga, Yeh Un Dinon Ki Baat Hai, than the above Namik Paul and Nikita Dutta serious love story (Ek Duje Ke Vaaste).

In today’s heightened patriotic times, the writers have fallen back on the age-old army civilian clash, based in the beautiful city of Bhopal.

On one hand, you have disciplined young NCC cadet Suman Tiwari (Kanikka Kapoor). And on the other, meet 18-year wayward civil Shravan (Mohit Kumar), who stays away all night to indulge in drinking binges.

He then takes a plunge in the river to get Indo Australia match ticket. We did not get one thing. He seemed to be in too much control when sloshed (neither was their hangover the next day ) Here too, the army civil schism is shown among the boys, but to play it safe, Shravan, tells off his boasting friend that your father is an army officer, not you, so get off your moral high horse. The army is above reproach.

In a bid to further reinforce the army image, they have even shot in that part of Bhopal where tank replicas are placed. A shivering Shravan then steals an army man’s jacket at a café but gets spotted by Suman’s retired army officer granddad (Ahmed Khan). Shravan runs away, with Suman giving him a chase, but then in the melee, he drops his ticket, which she finds.

Shravan is ably supported in all his stuff by his Bhopali speaking best friend, played by Jay Thakkar. He openly uses the friend card to make him do his bidding.

Shravan’s father is a Punjabi businessman (Akshay Anand) who sells things to the army. His fun romantic moment with his wife (Mamta Verma) brings a smile to our faces. The latter is a smart lady who balances both father and son; she also refuses to play along with her husband’s kissing up to the army’s top brass ploy.

Shravan’s father also buys a house next to Vijay’s pad. Akshay is doing a good job so far. On the other hand, Suman’s dad returns home from the cantonment. Col Vijay(Anurag Arora), is the epitome of officer and gentleman, very courteous to the fair sex. His wife is the classic fauji better half, who tells the husband, you take care of your desh, while I will tend to your house. She also has no problem being alone for long periods.

Vijay is to be felicitated at an army event, which is also attended by Shravan and family as both his dad and Vijay go back years. Vijay ‘s speech urges the youth to step up to to the plate (too much sermonizing.)

But even at the event, Shravan makes a complete fool of himself (illegal parking, trying to steal his ticket back from Suman and eating with hands).

An embarrassed father then decides to enrol him in army school to get him to straighten up. Sensing things going awry, Suman tries to step in by attending to Shravan’s wound (had fallen trying to her purse). Even here, they bring the army bravery part with Vijay telling Shravan’s dad that his orderly who was giving first aid to Shravan had taken a bullet for him.

Naturally, Shravan hates Suman, but now he will have to meet her on her army turf. His only ally is Suman’s younger sis who likes him. But will she later turn negative when both fall in love?

To complete the family, we have Vijay under confident civilian younger brother. His wife always wants him to ape his elder bro. The scene where he was ticked of by father for eating fatty stuff, while he was stuffing his face.

This is the story in a nutshell. Kanikka and Mohit are freshers who look good. We will have to see more of them to see how they go about. It is early days though. Kudos to Studio Next for a good maiden fiction attempt, ably supported by veteran writer and creative producer Dilip Jha. The best part is that it keeps up with Sony tradition of more realistic stories. Let’s hope the love story impresses as Yeh Uno Dino and Ek Duje Ke Vaaste.
