Celebrated Bollywood action director, Veeru Devgan, the man behind numerous eye-popping action stunts in well-loved Hindi films, passed away this morning in Mumbai.

Veeru Devgan, father of Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgan, had not been keeping well for some time. As news of his passing away spread, condolence messages started pouring in, with his colleagues, fans and well-wishers taking to Twitter to convey their sorrow.

Devgan Senior had choreographed the action sequences for numerous hit Bollywood movies, effortlessly straddling multiple eras. Veeru directed entertaining and death-defying action sequences for Bollywood, from the seventies to the eighties, and well into the nineties. With a filmography that spanned over 80 movies, Veeru worked with all the top actors of his time, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Anil Kapoor, Jeetendra, Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar and son, Ajay Devgn.

Some of the notable movies where he worked his magic were Aakhri Raasta, Shehenshah, Mr India, Tridev, Khoon Bhari Maang, and many more. He had even produced and directed Hindustan Ki Kasam with Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn in starring roles.

Ajay Devgn’s iconic introductory scene from Phool Aur Kaante, as he enters straddled atop two moving motorbikes, remains etched in every film-goer’s mind. It is just one example of the creative and death-defying stunts that Veeru Devgan choreographed.
