Band Baaja Baarat And Ratings: The Magical Connect

Weddings in Indian TV have always come with oodles of drama. And where there is wedding drama, there is a surge in ratings. We tell you why…

Weddings on Indian TV are always extravagant with respect to the look and feel!! However, if we look from a viewer’s perspective, it would seem as though the TV viewing audience loves the weddings shown on the small screen for its majestic and lavish display of celebrations, starting from the eye-striking jewelry to the gorgeous and grand attires worn!! However, weddings also mean drama and oodles of drama!!

Have we ever seen any wedding which does not cater to ‘drama’ on TV? The answer will be ‘never’!! Even while the viewers watching these dramatic weddings will pray that they never see such drama during weddings in real life, they simply love watching them for the extensive twists that they usually offer!!

Linked to such high-profile drama are of course the ratings!! So we can very conveniently say that one can bring in a wedding to ensure better ratings of a show!! The more the drama and excitement you introduce in a wedding plot, the more the merrier as there is every chance for the numbers to soar high!!

Recently, we witnessed few drama-laden wedding plots that caught the eye of the masses!! And trust us when we say this, even the Covid-hit ambiance, the shift of shoot from Maharashtra to other safer territories too, did not stop the makers from thinking big with respect to exercising the ‘wedding’ formula for a surge in ratings!!

We take a look at the very recent weddings in telly town!!

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai the extremely popular Star Plus show produced by Rajan Shahi’s Director’s Kut saw the nail-biting wedding sequence of Sirat (Shivangi Joshi) and Ranveer (Karan Kundrra). So what did the plot offer? Viewers who have watched it will tell us that all that happened was drama, drama and more drama!! Starting from a backlash and threat coming from the groom’s father to stop the wedding, to the well-dressed bride shedding off her grandeur and donning her boxing gloves to fight a match in the ring, we saw it all!!

Moving to the other Rajan Shahi show on Star Plus, Anupamaa, the loyal fans of the show watched drama at its best!! The wedding of Vanraj (Sudhanshu Pandey) and Kavya (Madalsa Sharma) has to go down in history, for having truckloads of drama!! While we predicted and assumed that the wedding might eventually not happen, it really happened!! But it was definitely not a cakewalk for the bride, as she had to grow wild in anger when her groom disappeared from the scene. She broke doors, screamed her lungs out and even threatened people around, before her ‘dulha’ finally got back!! She even pushed her groom-to-be to the brink when she asked him to choose between marriage and jail. This was a marriage that happened without family and guests!! But it was certainly not devoid of ‘DRAMA’. The result of this was that Anupamaa took a strong hold of the numero uno spot across all GECS with respect to numbers.

Now we get to the channel Colors which witnessed three big weddings in the last few weeks!!

Udaariyaan which is the dream project of actors turned Producers, Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta under their banner Dreamiyata Entertainment, saw some edge-of-the-seat drama wherein viewers were clueless about who will marry whom!! The triangle plot was made to use here, wherein two sisters Tejo (Priyanka Choudhary) and Jasmine (Isha Malviya) were pitted against the other!! While one sister refused to marry as she was not able to sacrifice her love for Canada, the other sister ended up marrying in order to save the family image. Think of the love-struck dulha Fateh (Ankit Gupta), this was really a painful affair!! The result of this wedding is that the show has really managed to gather momentum, with its numbers surging up.

The next wedding happened in Sasural Simar Ka 2, the show produced by Rashmi Sharma Productions. This one was dramatic from its start to finish!! Again, two sisters Simar (Radhika Muthukumar) and Reema (Tanya Sharma) faced the tricky situation of who will eventually turn out to be the bride to Aarav (Avinash Mukherjee). Groom or bride swapping is one of the formulae used for success in a small screen wedding!! And we did see one here. Reema who wanted to fulfill her professional commitment made her own sister Simar sit in her place as bride!! And after all the drama that ensued, Simar got married to Aarav!!

The next in line is Choti Sarrdaarni on Colors produced by Cockrow and Shaika Entertainment. This was a remarriage of Sarabjit (Avinesh Rekhi) and Meher (Nimrit Kaur) which actually indicated their reunion of sorts after a series of problems that included their separation. The makers brought in a new and interesting twist of a ‘Who-Did-It’ drama, wherein the protagonist went on a hunt to find out about the culprit who tried to kill her husband. The culprit was her own mother (Kulwant Kaur), who resolved to all kinds of tactics to stop her daughter from knowing the truth!!

Kumkum Bhagya on Zee TV produced by Balaji Telefilms has its cat and mouse drama on, wherein Abhi (Shabir Ahluwalia) has put his neck in line to be cut by the dagger called Tanu. He is planning a fake wedding with Tanu so that he can corner her and get her confession out and prove his innocence. Ex-wife Pragya (Sriti Jha) has been supporting him all through this fight. Eventually, goodness loses to the evil mindset, with Tanu succeeding in marrying Abhi!! Ouch, Pragya ka kya hoga?

Wedding drama is fully on in the Sony show Ishk Par Zor Nahi produced by Gul Khan’s 4 Lions Films. After a lot of nail-biting twists and turns that the viewers were engrossed in, Ahaan (Param Singh) and Ishqi (Akshita Mudgal) are all set to marry. Bear in mind, the twists that will come with it!!

The Sony TV show Kyun Utthe Dil Chhod Aaye the Shashi Sumeet show saw oodles of drama during the recent wedding!! The wedding happened between Amrit (Gracy Goswami) and Veer (Kunal Jaisingh), and it had the bride sacrificing by agreeing to marry in order to get Randheer (Zaan Khan) out from jail. A big sacrifice done for her love!!

Well, oh well, drama and weddings go hand in hand!! And of course, you can sense that the ratings silently tiptoes where there is the best of wedding drama!!(wink wink)
