Opinion: Progressive Shows on TV – The Need Of The Hour

We at IWMBuzz.com talk about the need for more progressive shows on Television.

Hindi television is going through a new-age phenomenon where experimentation is happening in full swing with regards to concepts!! Having said this, more than often, only the tried-and-tested formulas have worked in a long run. There is always a myth that TV will one day forego the ‘saas-bahu’ formula and move forward. But guess this will never happen, with the ‘saas’ and ‘bahus’ truly ruling on our screens!!

So what is television overall giving viewers daily? Is a proper balance maintained wherein the concepts create a happy environment in our living rooms as we watch them?

We are emphasizing more on ‘happiness’ here as the entire Nation and mankind is presently overcome with a lot of grief and problems created by the emergence and spread of Covid-19 pandemic. So when one switches on the TV set, are you benefitted from what you watch?

The answer is sadly a ‘No’ many a time!! Why do we say so?

Just look around the shows that are presently on air on Hindi TV. You will either see the extra-marital affairs prevailing and doing well, or this seed of revenge and anger being sown into the main characters. You see your female leads crying in despair as they are cheated upon by the men they love. Elsewhere, we see the bad and the evil winning all the battles over the good.

At this juncture, we feel that what is the need of the hour on television are more of the progressive concepts.

Certainly, there are a few concepts that people watch and derive pleasure from!!

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah the successful and long-running Sony SAB show produced by Neela Telefilms caters to audiences of all ages. The best aspect about this show is that it depicts the day-to-day life of residents in Gokuldham Society, in a very realistic way. There are no negative characters on the show. This is the sole reason why this show is one of the top-rated shows on GEC even when it has been on air for many years.

Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey, the Hats Off Productions show that airs on Sony SAB shows the day-to-day struggles that a simple middle-class family goes through. Again, the realistic presentation of characters is the key here.

Maddam Sir on Sony SAB produced by Jay Productions is again a unique concept revolving female police officers who work in a Mahila police station. The show has garnered great word of mouth, with its characters being extremely popular.

Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana, the Star Plus show produced by Zama Habib’s Qissago Telefilms has seen set around the backdrop of the pandemic scare. The story’s crux is of the Sakhuja family losing its breadwinner, in the Covid battle. The family accepts the death of the Covid warrior and is again on the lookout for that ray of happiness to get back into the household.

Yes, the need of the hour is happiness and all that brings about happiness and spreads the feeling of positivity has to be welcomed with open arms!!

‘Supply always comes on the heels of demand’ said Robert Collier.

So why not create more of the progressive, happy concepts to keep the viewers happy?
