Opinion: The Rise Of Anti-Heroes In Indian Television

On Indian television, where the hero is often worshipped, anti-hero films are rare. There’s something about the grey shade that draws attention. These anti-heroes act according to circumstances and are not afraid to do or say what they feel is right. They’re bad, they are cunning, and they’re always looking to mess the lives of people around when it’s going good for them.

With audiences looking forward to characters no longer picture-perfect, the small screen has made way for the anti-hero. The anti-hero becomes one of the favourites of the TV series and this is the rising trend now. Keeping these bad boys in mind, here we present to the hottest bad boys of Indian television.

Zain Imam: The young and talented actor, who always played positive roles in shows like Naamkarann and Ek Bhram Sarvagun Sampanna, is currently charming his fans as Agastya in the Colors show Fanaa: Ishq Mein Marjawan. In the storyline, Agastya and Pakhi have been best friends for seven years. Agastya is obsessed with Pakhi, but Pakhi is unfortunately unaware of it. She sees him as a special friend with whom she can openly discuss her love life too. Zain is the perfect choice for this anti-hero role.

Fahmaan Khan: In the show Imlie on Star Plus, Fahmaan Khan entered as Aryaan. He came and conquered with his exceptional acting talent. He is seen currently opposite the lead protagonist Imlie and making her life hell. Fahmaan has done quite a few shows, but this character is getting immense love.

Vijayendra Kumeria: Vijayendra’s performance as Armaan Oberoi in Mose Chhal Kiye Jaye has been widely appreciated for its realistic nature and brilliant artistic representations. He marries Soumya, who believes her marriage with Armaan feels that of equals, with her husband supporting her ambitions. However, Armaan has a different perception when it comes to real life and believes in ruling over women.

Ayaz Ahmed: The actor was seen as Raghu Naik in Do Dil Ek Jaan. The gangster tries every trick to make the female protagonist’s life difficult. But then he undergoes a change of heart.

Vivian Dsena: Handsome hunk played the role of Rishabh Kundra (RK) in Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon. He led Madhubala to the altar, only to abandon her as he wanted to take his revenge for one tight slap from her. Later, he realized he loved her and won her back.

Mohit Malik: The young actor was seen playing the character of a rich businessman Samrat Singh Rathore in Doli Armaanon Ki on Zee TV. His introductory scene itself showed him to be very rude and insulting when instead of taking the side of the girl (Snigdha Srivastav) who is being eve teased on the roads he tells her to not create a scene and move on. When he gets married to Urmi (Neha Marda) he is shown to be insulting and commanding not only to her but also to all other members of the family.

Apart from these, Arnav Singh Raizada (played by Barun Sobti) in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Was always arrogant and rude with his newly acquired wife Khushi whom he blackmailed into a secret wedding. Viraj Dobrial (Karanvir Bohra) in Dil Se Di Dua…Saubhagyavati Bhav? or Sameer (played by Mrunal Jain) in Hitler Didi also leave the female protagonist heartbroken. That apart, aggressive and short-tempered Indu Singh (enacted by Anirudh Dave) of Ruk Jaana Nahin or Krishna (Arhaan Behl) of Mann Ki Awaaz… Pratigya, and Jagya (played by Shashank Vyas) of Balika Vadhu also fit into the league of ‘imperfect anti-heroes’
