When a show like Ishqbaaz that breaks stereotypes succeeds, it gives you a different kind of joy: Producer Gul Khan

Star Plus’ popular show Ishqbaaz – Pyaar Ki Ek Dhinchaak Kahani produced by 4 Lions Films will bid adieu to the audiences on 15 March!!

The show which began with the title Ishqbaaaz which depicted the life and journey of the Oberoi brothers (Nakuul Mehta, Kunal Jaisingh and Leenesh Mattoo) has had a great run fro m the time of its inception in the year 2016.

The show has been known for breaking quite a few stereotypes with its daring story line and characterizations.

In a bid to thank the loyal fans of Ishqbaaz, Producer Gul Khan talked to IWMBuzz.com about the journey, on the takeaways from the show and much more..

Says Gul, “We created a show where three boys became the iconic poster!! In a bahu driven industry, Ishqbaaaz was a break away visual!! Also, we were the first in India to introduce a spin-off.”

Writing has been IB’s key strength. We got an imagery where the men of the house entered the kitchen!! The heroine did not know how to cook. And the country accepted it.

Talking about her leading man Nakuul Mehta and the characters he played, Gul states, “Shivaay as a character has won millions of hearts and that credit goes to Nakuul Mehta for performing the character impeccably. Nobody would have played Shivaay like he did.”

Stating the reasons for the success of IB, she shares, “Writing has been IB’s key strength. IB has gone were TV show goes, tackling contemporary issues, like why ‘beta’ is called a ‘Hira’, Mera beta Hira Hai!!, and why we don’t accept that everybody has ex’s. We very tactfully discussed ex-girl friends and ex-boy friends. We also talked about why mothers have to give up their careers and not fathers!!”

IB bahus wore from jeans to off shoulders to dresses. This was yet another big achievement for all of us and we broke a big stereo type. And again, people accepted it.

Ask her what makes Ishqbaaz different from other soaps and she quips, “When I watch daily soaps, all I can see is women wearing sarees and cooking and trying to be a fixer of the family!! I used to wonder why only women are supposed to do that, and although most people get carried away by superficial topics like who we are casting and who we are removing, people forget to see the biggest challenge IB tackled!! We got an imagery where the men of the house entered the kitchen!! The heroine did not know how to cook. And the country accepted it. So I would say that breaking gender stereotypes was the biggest achievement for IB.”

“We created a girl who did not take her husband’s surname after marriage. That’s a very bold step for an Indian daily soap! IB not only changed the imagery of men being in kitchens but it also broke a strict image of a bahu only in a saree. Ishqbaaz bahus wore from jeans to off shoulders to dresses. This was yet another big achievement for all of us and we broke a big stereo type. And again, people accepted it,” she adds.

All we take away from Ishqbaaz is that your Ishqbaazi and love for telling stories just make you feel more alive and very happy!!

“There are many people who are responsible for making it work. Firstly, Star Plus and the team who were so absolutely open-minded to be fine to break away from typical daily soap stereotypes. The actors who gave it life so flawlessly need to be commended; the writers who actually broke the chain of the typical and the director who shot it unlike any TV show have been amazing. Our costumes were out of the world. Cinematographer, music director and editor did a great job” she exclaims.

I cannot thank the viewers enough for making Ishqbaaz what it became.

Personally, Gul shares, “Ishqbaaz has been a wonderful ride and it is a great feeling that we achieved what we had set out to achieve. A show that challenged stereo types and a platform where a contemporary and relevant issues like #metoo and not being fluent in English could be dealt with!!. All we take away from Ishqbaaz is that your Ishqbaazi and love for telling stories just make you feel more alive and very happy!!.”

Above all, Gul has a special mention for the viewers, “I cannot thank the viewers enough for making it what it became.”

Aww!!
