Weekday fiction has been our Achilles heel, but we hope to turn things around: Ashish Golwalkar

Sony TV’s Ashish Golwalkar in a candid conversation with IndianWikiMedia

Sony Entertainment Television, one of the major GECs in India, has always seen a seesaw scenario on the decisive ratings chart. However, of late the trend has been on the higher side, much to the glee of the channel top bosses who work round the clock to ensure sculpting of engaging, entertaining content.

Dynamic doyen Ashish Golwalkar, Senior Creative Director at Sony, is one individual who via his relentless hardwork and creative intelligence (over the years), has made the skyline of Indian television more shiny and shimmery, gifting smiles to each and every small screen lover.

Now, the team at Sony, after success of Kaun Banega Crorepati latest season, is gung ho on his upcoming popular series Super Dancer season 2.

Talking about the channel’s recent good run, Ashish tells IndianWikiMedia: “It feels nicer since our growth is organic; we hope to rise even further as we have a number of interesting properties up our sleeve.”

Talking about KBC which has led to this change of fate he says. “The format has always worked wonders for us.  The super success of this season is gratifying. I guess what has worked apart from charisma of Mr Amitabh Bachchan, is the more pacey nature of the show. There are more questions and the focus is more on the quiz than anything else.”

Also the new interactive feature has definitely helped in raising viewership, like people are playing along using the App. To play you need to watch the show, so that helps.”

Interesting insights!!!

Moving on, Ashish is hopeful of the great run continuing with Super Dancer. “This is home grown property which is beginning to attract attention overseas as well. Last year we were the highest-rated non-fiction property. This year with the same judges (Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Anurag Basu and Geeta Kapur) and hosts (Rithvik Dhanjani, Paritosh Tripathi) we hope to go a notch higher as the talent found is too good.”

Here he admits that the real challenge for Sony would be is to maintain its GRP once KBC finishes its eight weeks run.  “Yes, weekday fiction has been our Achilles heel.  But we hope to turn things around with new shows like Haasil, Porus and Prithvi Vallabh, we do agree that our numbers might get hit, but hope to cut the losses with the new shows.  Hopefully, The Kapil Sharma Show will return, when he (host Kapil) recovers fully.”

We point out to the new slick promos of the above upcoming fiction shows which are eye catchy. “These days it is essential to create a good enough buzz to sample the product.  Stickiness will come if the shows appeal to the viewers. Promos do vet their appetite.”

Talking about Beyhadh which will soon wrap up he says, “This property has done good for us. It was designed for six to eight months, but we extended it.”

Last but not the least, he says, “Public feedback played an important role in the short second season of  Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi –  a little bit of the story was left, so we decided to bow to public demand and complete the story .”

On that note, we wish Ashish a great stint ahead.
