Because of the same storyline and saas-bahu melodrama, most of the 90’s youngsters, who must be in their late 20’s or 30’s by now, have grown to despise the current series on Indian television. Even reality programs appear to have gotten robust and redundant in recent years. Most 90’s kids would go to online streaming sites and look for spectacular old TV series that appealed to everyone in the family’s demands. Yes, there was a moment in Indian television history when television shows were not just for ladies, but for the entire family.
Everyone would flock to watch these shows, from kids to seniors to youths to angry middle-aged office workers. If you haven’t guessed it by now, we have a full list of wonderful TV series from the past that didn’t only entertain us but became so much more than that. As we grew older, these programs were a source of comfort for many of us.
Not to say that saas-bahu banter wasn’t there on TV back then, but it wasn’t inflated to absurd proportions like it is nowadays. When we saw these episodes, we wished we had a time machine or even Doctor Strange’s Time Stone from Avengers to travel back in time. Tu Tu Main Main, Hip Hip Hurray, Just Mohabbat, Hum Paanch, and many other shows demonstrated the power of narrative on Indian television. As a result, here’s a look back at all the shows we’d like to rewatch on our televisions.
Tu Tu Main Main- The picture of a strong mother-in-law, Reema Lagoo, fighting a happy daughter-in-law, Supriya Pilgaonkar, is the most memorable portrayal of a saas-bahu relationship that people from the 1990s would remember. Tu Tu Main Main, directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar, was one of the performances that not only depicted the aspect of battling saas-bahu’s but also had some wonderful humorous punches. The plot was extremely engaging, and we wished we could go back in time.
Hip Hip Hurray- Recall the narrative of high school teens, but without the theatrical attitude that we see in today’s youngsters? DeNobil High School students, on the other hand, will always have a special place in our hearts. From Purab Kohli as Mazhar to Vishal Malhotra as John, the plot of Hip Hip Hurray made us feel at home as teens battling with love, education, and friendships back in the day.
Remix- Take note, Maurya High! Do you remember this? If you don’t, here’s a flashback to the days of Remix. Tia, Ranveer, Anvesha, and Yuvraaj represented diverse strata of society brought together in an upscale boarding school in the play that illustrated the life of a modern school of those times. While the friendship between Tia and Ranveer and Yuvi and Anvesha was a highlight, Aasma’s music was the show’s biggest selling point. We wish more programs would produce wonderful music!
Hum Paanch – Hey! Who can forget Balaji Telefilms’ epic show about a humorous family of seven, in which a nagging woman continued bothering her already irritated husband with five wacky children and a photo of a talking dead wife? From Choti to Sweety, everyone on Hum Paanch left an effect on us, and as a result, it remains one of the finest comedy series ever produced on Indian television. Are you listening, Ekta Kapoor?
