She was the perfect blend of a traditional and modern mother who break the norms of stereotype Bollywood maa that it was enacted in movies until her entry. Her career in film spanned for almost four decades in which she played mother to actress and actors like Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Govinda and many more. Her acting arena is spread across television and theatre. Coming from the family of actors, acting was in her blood and she started her career by doing theatre.
She acted in Marathi theatres in the 80s when Shyam Benegal launched her in Hindi films with Kalyug opposite Shashi Kapoor.
Thereafter she did numerous films like Aakrosh, Nasoor, and Rihai. Her first commercial Bollywood film was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in which she played the character of Juhi Chawla mother. Having worked with all the leading Indian filmmakers and actors in the career of around 40 years in the film industry, she challenged the prototype Bollywood mothers. She became a nationwide sensation with her character in Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Saath Saath Hain.
She has been long associated with Marathi stage where she acted for nearly four decades playing different characters and creating waves with a performance in series like Tuza Maza Jamena, and films like Bindhast, Aai Shappath, Me Shivajiraji Bhosale Boltoy, Gho Mala Asla Hawa, and Anumati
She also played a very crucial role in web series Casting Couch which is an Undercover journey with Marathi celebrity.
In the TV series Tuza Maza Jamena, she played a quintessential mother in law. Bindhast is one of her finest performance. As her role of Jija Bai in Me Shivajiraji Bhosle Boltoy, she has justified her par excellence in acting.
In Marathi movie, Nital she played the role of Rama Ranade. This movie became one of the most unusual social films.
