Seema Biswas, the talented actress, who gained prominence after playing the role of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur’s film Bandit Queen (1994), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress, graduated in political science with honours from Nalbari College, Assam.

Seema studied dramatic arts at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. Biswas played the lead in Krishnan Kartha’s Amshini (Hindi), it entered the Indian Panorama Section of Filmotsav 1988. However, the general belief is that she debuted after Shekhar Kapur watched her perform in the NSD Repertory Company and offered her a role in Bandit Queen.

Not many know, but as per reports in Tribune India, on the third day of the 6th Natyam National Theatre Festival, Seema tugged at the heartstrings of the audience with the portrayal in the play ‘Streea Patar’. The play was being written by Rabindranath Tagore and was directed by Biswas herself. The play was originally written in a letter format and on a short story of Tagore. The play revolved around a woman who renounces her marital life and then start writing several letters to her estranged husband.
