Shriram Lagoo’s gift to the theatre world

When we talk of the pioneers of the Indian theatre world, one of the first names that come to our mind is Shriram Lagoo. He was born in Satara in the state of Maharashtra. He is remembered as a splendid Indian theatre actor. But not only this, he was also a film actor, director and an ENT surgeon. He worked in both, Hindi as well as Marathi plays. In his span of a career, he has worked in over 100 Hindi and Marathi films, over 40 Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati plays and also directed over 20 plays in Marathi.

He completed his education from the University of Pune with two medical degrees, MBBS and MS. We find it amusing how there was a switch and balance between the medical and theatre world for him. The legend started acting in plays while he was in medical college and that is how he discovered his interest in the field. he then went on to nurture more of his acting skills through a group called Progressive Dramatic Association. In the year 1969, he finally became a full-time actor after practicing his medical courses. His first play was called Ithe Oshalala Mrityu which was written by Vasant Kanetkar. He is best remembered for his role in the Marathi play Natasamrat. Some of his most prestigious works include Gidhade, Garbo and Atmakatha.
